This ethereal and bucolic Leonor Fini lithograph depicting a young girl with a flower crown is a beautiful example of this legendary artist’s female-driven work. The carefully crafted handmade frame, created by a special Belgian studio, painted in a luscious emerald green color with intricate detailing and just enough gilt for warmth and shine, perfectly embraces the tender portrait. The lithograph is signed in pencil, bottom right, and is noted as EA (épreuve d'artiste, which is the phrase for artist’s proof)

Leonor Fini was born in Argentina in 1907, raised in Italy by her mother, and lived most of her adult life in Paris as one of the prominent female surrealist artists of the 20th century. She died in Paris at the age of 88. Although she was living in Paris during its formative years, she never formerly joined the surrealist movement, which was dominated by male artists in France at the time. She was close with many of her contemporary artists, like Jean Cocteau, Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, and her work was celebrated. Giorgio de Chirico had a great influence on her work and she worked with Elsa Schiaparelli in the 30s and early 40s. In 1943, she was one of 31 female artists in an special exhibit organized by Peggy Guggenheim in New York City. Her good friend, Henri Cartier-Besson famously photographed her nude in a pool of water, the photo was sold at auction in 2007 for a record-breaking $305,000.
